Tidal Landscapes

Settle into an upward spiral.

by Takuma Ono

Many are capable of visualizing tidal landscapes—and are capable of experiencing these magical spaces through remembrance. Recordings of ocean wave sound can activate one’s memory; sound is a signal that activates metabolic activity and blood flow to various parts of the brain. In the same vein, landscapes that borrow from the forms, textures, and patterns found in tidal environments can act as visual cues/signals that evoke nostalgia and/or simply induce and establish a positive emotional state through this bond.

What sets tidal landscapes apart from other landscapes?

  • Tidal landscapes exquisitely capture the passage of time; at the shore, life’s finite and cyclical nature is on exhibit through the shells and stones it carries. Look closely and one can see that the grains of sand are comprised of weathered rock and fragments of weathered shells, which further degrade to become ions that replenish the sea with essential building blocks of life.

  • Through its infinite horizon and sky-reflecting surfaces, tidal landscapes evoke a timeless, boundless reality.

  • Out by the sea, we can readily experience the present—losing track of time seems to come with the territory.

What are the benefits of spending some part of every day being in a positive emotional state?

  • As a living, breathing being, your positive emotions and experiences are remembered by your body and mind—and its possible to accrue it over a lifetime.

  • Those who accrue positive emotions and experiences over time have a higher capacity to endure stress—positive affect can act as a stress buffer.

  • The accrual of positive experiences can set one into an upward spiral; positive affect can lead to higher stress resilience, which leads to more positive affect over time. Fortune favors those with positive affect.
